delicious Southern Fried Shrimp
Ingredients:
1 lb large shrimp, peeled & deveined (tails on or off)
1 cup buttermilk
1 cup cornmeal
½ cup all-purpose flour
1 tsp salt
1 tsp black pepper
½ tsp cayenne pepper (optional for heat)
½ tsp garlic powder
½ tsp onion powder
½ tsp paprika
Oil for frying (vegetable or peanut oil)
Instructions:
1. Prepare the Shrimp: Pat shrimp dry with paper towels. Soak them in buttermilk for 15-20 minutes.
2. Make the Coating: In a shallow bowl, mix cornmeal, flour, salt, black pepper, cayenne, garlic powder, onion powder, and paprika.
3. Coat the Shrimp: Remove shrimp from buttermilk, letting excess drip off. Dredge in the seasoned cornmeal mixture, pressing lightly for a good coating.
4. Fry the Shrimp: Heat oil in a deep skillet or fryer to 350°F. Fry shrimp in batches for 2-3 minutes until golden brown and crispy.
5. Drain & Serve: Remove shrimp and drain on a wire rack or paper towels. Serve hot with cocktail sauce, tartar sauce, or remoulade.
